Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
