We're Getting a Fresh Title in the Greatest Star Wars Series Ever Made, Helmed by a Mass Effect Veteran.

Star Wars aficionados are hardly bereft of choices when it comes to great interactive experiences showcasing lightsabers, but the universe imagined by George Lucas is far beyond a playground for combat. Not many franchises have comprehended this as well as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was forged in the classic computer role-playing game style that made studios like Obsidian and BioWare renowned. Now, after a number of fits and starts, The Game Awards has announced that fans will soon be able to dive into a spiritual successor to the beloved franchise. It's called Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic.

The Major Announcement

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is labeled "a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Casey Hudson, formerly of BioWare and the game director of the original KOTOR, is at the helm at Arcanaut Studios.

“When we developed the original KOTOR, we wanted to build a definitive Star Wars experience — shaping an adventure that contained all the things we hoped to doing as Star Wars fans,” Hudson explained. “Now, 25 years after we started work on that game, our goals are equally ambitious. Fate of the Old Republic signifies an possibility to delve into a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using advanced technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”

A Surprising Development

The reveal is a bit of a shock, given that 2022 saw a contemporary effort at an Old Republic game get shelved. However, reports had suggested that a remake of KotOR, as well as one of its sequel, had been in the works up until March 2025.

Here is the summary for the new title:

Developed by Arcanaut Studios in partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a new single-player narrative-driven action RPG and spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Led by Casey Hudson, Game director of the original Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy, the team of veteran game developers and storytellers at Arcanaut Studios is crafting an epic interactive adventure across a galaxy on the brink of rebirth where every decision shapes your path towards light or darkness. Fate is in your hands.

Why KOTOR Matters

The venerated role-playing games, which have been made available to platforms like the Switch, are known for their conversation-rich, choice-driven, and character-sheet-deep approach to Star Wars. The games were influential enough that they accidentally defined how people visualize the Old Republic time period as a whole, even now. The games ventured to question many aspects of Jedi lore that are often treated as inarguable, like whether the faction and its understanding of the Force are correct. The second game, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords, went in a considerably bleaker direction by asking if the world might not be wiser without the Jedi at all. Both games are venerated by fans years after their release, but the follow-up in particular is considered by some as one of the best pieces of Star Wars media ever made.

The Future is Bright

And now, a few years after seeing a cinematic trailer for a Knights of the Old Republic remake, the community is at last being granted another game in the same vein. Given the demand for deep games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Divinity: Original Sin, a new take on Knights of the Old Republic that's done well has the potential to be incredibly popular.
