Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Will the creator Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… in a way.
“We've developed some potential directions about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I imagine we will be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
