Users Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these medications should be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined behavioural changes.
