This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of consuming swine during the holidays, was founded to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a musical verse – often seemingly at random. The trend became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to open the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It captures the character of Miami: joyful, varied, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Annually, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
