The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its current cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
