The Mayor-Elect confirms his intention to reside in historic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate during his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors since the post-war period.
But, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core issue, was not quick to announce this decision immediately after his electoral win in November.
"The choice rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he noted.
"Although my address will change there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his rivals, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for occupying the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience an environment very different than his previous Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house situated by the East River.
Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the price of rent outpaces the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
