The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

No fewer than 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local police have called a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 injured people were transported to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
