Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

Nevertheless, Génération Foot – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

A Landmark Year and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own legendary path in the game.
