Keeper Mary Earps has openly declared that her recently published autobiography was never intended to “damage others” and shared worry that audience feedback has been “misinterpreted.”

Disputed Remarks and Public Criticism

The ex-Lionesses goalkeeper, who was instrumental in the championship win, faced backlash from supporters and Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor after making remarks about past Lioness Hannah Hampton and head coach Sarina Wiegman.

In her autobiography, Earps wrote that she told Wiegman she was “rewarding bad behaviour” by recalling Hampton to the Lionesses lineup after omitting her for being “problematic and undependable.”

“It’s been really overwhelming to see how certain aspects were twisted,” Earps stated publicly.

Explaining Her Motives

Earps firmly declared that her memoir was not meant to harm individuals.

• “My memoir wasn’t created to criticize others in any manner.”
• “That is not who I am as a person.”
• “This is real life. It has consequences. It is not entertainment.”

She also remarked about how the women’s game has evolved into a realm that has become “almost like performance,” where personal lives are analyzed in detail for audience entertainment.

Relationship with Wiegman

Earps discussed being replaced as England’s number one before the European Championship and how that strained her relationship with Wiegman.

She clarified it was “not a rapid decline” in their dynamic—just a divergence in opinions—and she maintains respect for the coach.

“Several incidents that happened in the summer that I wish had happened differently,” Earps added.

Individual Difficulties

In her book, Earps discussed openly the mistreatment she experienced at school, describing it as a “really hard” chapter to revisit because it brought back previous trauma.

• “I was trained to feel like nobody really cares.”

These feelings led to panic attacks, and Earps shared she had issues with body image and resorted to drinking during the global health crisis to handle emotional difficulties.

Relationships and Goals

Earps recently shared that she is in a relationship with a woman and shared her happiness about her connection with Kitty.

She also talked about her desire to be a mother and revealed she has frozen her eggs for future use.

“I really want to be a mum and have a household,” Earps stated. “I enjoy my football career, but I hope to have a child in the future.”

Earps characterized the egg-freezing procedure as “crazy and invasive” and advocated for more investigation tailored to athletes undergoing similar procedures.

During her remarks, Earps emphasized that she has no second thoughts about her sports path or individual actions, highlighting that she always behaved honestly.
