Louisiana Local Accused of Assisting Militant Group in October 7 Attack on Israeli Territory, American Authorities Say
US federal attorneys have charged a Louisiana inhabitant of taking part in the 7 October attack by the militant faction on Israeli soil, as per recently revealed court documents.
Mahmoud Amin Ya'qub al-Muhtadi, thirty-three, reportedly armed himself and became part of a paramilitary unit that fought alongside the organization during the 2023's incursion that killed 1,195 Israeli citizens, triggering 24 months of fighting that killed many additional individuals.
Twelve months after the incident, he supposedly journeyed to the US on a fraudulent visa and obtained status as a permanent resident.
The accused was charged with supplying, trying to provide or conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and the fraud and improper use of a travel document or other documents.
Alleged Involvement with Armed Faction
Mr al-Muhtadi was allegedly an operative of the National Resistance Brigades, the military wing of the DFLP, according to the legal filing brought by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
He is charged of coordinating a "group of militants" to cross into Israel upon hearing about the raid and asked one individual to "bring the firearms", legal documents show.
The suspect dispatched messages instructing other persons to bring a bulletproof vest for a different individual and ammunition, authorities allege.
Hours following the October 7 attack began, his mobile device pinged a cell tower near the kibbutz, the sight of a massacre, the records stated.
Legal Process and Response
The complaint indicated that the accused denied ever having been engaged in terrorist activities on his US visa application.
Upon coming to the United States, he resided in a few of locations before landing in the Louisiana city, where he worked in a local eatery.
He was taken into custody on the past Thursday, the DOJ announced.
In a court appearance in Louisiana on the following day, he was asked if he understood the allegations facing him, an interpreter translated his response as "yes, but there are a lot of points stated in this document that are so incorrect, I am not guilty", according to sources.
The documents do not charge the defendant of specific offenses or homicides. US attorneys have in the past indicted senior individuals of Hamas with the deaths of American nationals on October 7.
