Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
