Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued video stills Monday of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries were reported.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
