'Serious blow' for England as Atkinson leaves the field with a hamstring injury.

The English seamer added to the injury concerns plaguing England upon exiting the field on the second morning of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.

Atkinson felt a problem in his hamstring post-delivery of the fourth over during the morning session.

Team management reported the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and would spend time away from the action for further assessment "in the coming hours".

The concluding match in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January starts at the end of the week.

The visitors have already lost strike bowlers one seamer with a knee problem and Jofra Archer because of a side injury during this series.

A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood.

His form was underwhelming during the first two matches, taking just a handful of scalps.

He was omitted from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the Melbourne Test in the playing XI.

Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps with the ball, and scoring 28 runs while batting being one of only three England players who passed ten runs.

After bowling one over at the end of day one, he resumed the next day and removed Scott Boland Scott Boland caught behind.

Unfortunately, towards the conclusion of the fifth over, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.

Atkinson was brought back for the Boxing Day Test following his omission the Adelaide game.
