Recreational competitors are getting the possibility to claim a seven-figure prize when they take on tennis' top professionals - including top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz - in a single-point showdown before the Australian Grand Slam

Event planners of the Melbourne major have revealed the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will match everyday competitors against top-ranked players in a single-elimination format at the Australian Open venue

How the Tournament Functions

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to decide who gets to serve or return, and whoever wins the point will advance to the next round

The champion of the event will earn approximately half a million pounds

For comparison, players who reached the final four of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won A$1.1m

The Australian Open held its first-ever One Point Slam this year, but the total purse was a smaller amount and it received minimal attention

One top competitor was the sole elite competitor participating, and his progress concluded when he sent the single service opportunity allowed into the net in his last eight match

Organizers have not specified precisely how the event will work, but it is anticipated to mirror a similar format to the previous version

The professionals will be granted to have a single serve and the everyday players two times - as is the norm in traditional tennis

While it is uncertain how the bracket will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the secondary venue

The concluding rounds will be held in a nighttime schedule instead of 1pm local time

Entry Details

Any Australians - or international players who have registered with Tennis Australia - can participate in 'quick-match event' competitions at their community centers

The winners of the local competitions will then go into a selection process, with an everyday competitor from every region and area picked to compete in the 'grand finale' in a nighttime event on mid-January

There will also be a preliminary competition in late year which everyday players, aspiring competitors, celebrities and sport stars can compete in

It commences on Monday, 12 January and the pair of champions will go into Wednesday's 'final showdown' with the remaining non-professionals and elite competitors

"Regardless of your skill level, the ultimate winner will claim the reward. Applications will begin shortly at venues throughout the nation"

Tournament officials stated there were "more big names to be revealed shortly", while the event portal mentioned "well-known figures" would be involved
