Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
