A Story of Unexpected Generosity: The Time a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

During the year 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book lodging upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and every single backpackers hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, reasoning I could pass the evening in a place that stayed open all night. This was not ideal in the ideal condition to succeed at an interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more people with such compassion.

I must have looked lost as a woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress at her university residence at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided some food: one of the stuffed baguettes she brought back her part-time job. This gave me warm shower facilities and somewhere safe to rest to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted as a young woman allowing a man who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – but still deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up go to the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of kindness. It is my wish the universe has returned her good deed many times over. We could all use more people with such compassion.
