A Special Release Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective On Speculators
Marking the arrival of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a temporary store stocked with exclusive merchandise. Enthusiasts will find products like stationery, plushes, and artwork that are drawing from the institution's theme. For collectors, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, given as a free bonus at the pop-up. This shop will operate from on-site at the museum and its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.
The Book That Inspires the Collaboration
Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited tome packed with beautiful artwork depicting creatures in their wild environments. It's essentially is what an in-world scientist might publish after trainers submit their data, or a naturalist's journal could have sketched if the famous islands were populated by flying-types rather than finches. Part of the charm lies in the book's scholarly treatment, treating Pokémon as worthy of scientific inquiry. Writer Yoshinari Yonehara and illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.
Why This Special Card Different
It is common to issue special edition promos for major tournaments or brand collaborations. A lot such collector items typically highlight the iconic electric rodent who serves as the series face. What distinguishes this latest promotion apart however, is the unusually large dimensions. While precise specs were not immediately shared, availability will certainly be highly restricted, and customers limited to only a single card per purchase.
Curbing Reseller Activity
Per an official statement, some of the merchandise may also be available outside the institution itself. However, broader availability is slated for specific stores within the United Kingdom. Importantly, fans will not be able to purchase this promo through the online Pokémon Center. Although speculator demand is a given, it appears they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to Chicago later this year.
"Every penny of sales from the Museum shop and its web shop, including Pokémon products, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers dedicated to conducting studies to discover solutions to the planetary emergency," it notes.
